Basketball is a team game played by individuals. In the past decade, I have noticed a dangerous trend that is extremely detrimental to players, coaches, teams, and the game itself. Basketball is becoming an individual game played by teams. When I ask players what they want for their upcoming season, I rarely get this answer…
“I want to make my team great.”
Or…
“I want to be on a great team.”
Here are a few of the most common answers I get…
“I want to start.”
“I want to average 20 points per game.”
“I want to get college scholarship offers.”
“I want to be All-State.”
I could go on and on, but you get the point. Players, for you to reach your potential you cannot let your individual results and goals come before what matters the most- Your team being great. Great players (Collegiate players) play on good teams. In my 9 years as a college coach on the recruiting trail we recruited many great players. Guess how many of them played on high school teams who were under .500… ZERO.
Individual goals are great, but they can never trump your team goals and vision. When you think about your upcoming season, what is the first thing that pops into your mind? Is it your team goals? Is it how you are going to make your team great? Or is it all about you? Because what you think about is who you will be on the court.
ELEVATE YOUR TEAM will be a series of short articles that will remove the emphasis off of individualized basketball and show you how you can elevate your team. I hope you’re ready. Because there is nothing like playing on a great team. We want to help you ready your mind for a big season. You might have to change your focus and priorities a little, but trust me… it’s worth it. And it will bleed into every other facet of your game… especially your basketball I.Q. because you will see the game like a coach. YOU WILL EVEN BE MORE LIKELY TO REACH YOUR INDIVIDUAL GOALS! Because every college coach wants a winner.
