Improvement in basketball is mostly an individual thing. Serious players must get in the gym and work on their game on their own if they want to be the best they can be. But does it always have to be an individual thing? Especially now, in the fall, as the season nears, serious players need to start getting into the team mindset and building chemistry with their teammates on the court.
FACT- If the only time you improve is during practice hours, you won’t be very good.
This fact is true for you as well as your teammates. So let me ask you this, are you a great teammate if you know this fact and keep it to yourself?
Great players ELEVATE THEIR TEAMS.
What if you helped the coach motivate your teammates to get in the gym and get better outside of practice? Great teams are a collective unit of players with big dreams, a focused vision, and a plan of attack that will turn their goals into a reality. COLLECTIVE UNIT- not one player.
Have you and your teammates discussed your goals, vision, and plan? Look… you can’t assume it’s understood. It’s not. I hear players tell me all the time, “my teammates just don’t want it as bad as I do.” Well… That may be, but have you really talked to them about it? Or do you just make that assumption because of their actions, or lack thereof. When I hear a player say that, all I hear is a cop out. I don’t hear a great player/teammate/leader. I hear a selfish player that wants to show me how great he is compared to his teammates. Take a look at what the great player/teammate/leader does.
Leaders…
- Discuss team goals and a plan to reach them with their teammates.
- Get outside themselves and think about how they can elevate the team, not just their own game.
- Don’t sit around and complain about what their teammates are not
- Inspire their teammates to action and motivate them to better themselves and the team.
- Recruit Partners in Crime to get in the gym and the weight room with them.
- Celebrate their teammates when they work out together and create a sense of pride in their shared sense of accomplishment. Shared accomplishment and suffering (hard work) creates comaraderie.
- Are consistent. They have a plan and stick to it.
- Don’t take no for an answer.
There will be excuses available for you and your teammates if you want them. I can’t find a gym… I can’t get a ride… I’m not feeling well…etc. If you aren’t okay with mediocrity, just say no to the excuses. Real leaders will find a way. They stop at no obstacles.
ARE YOU A REAL LEADER?
ARE YOU READY TO ELEVATE YOUR TEAM?
It’s your choice… You can complain about what is not. Or you can make what will be.
